How much TV should be acceptable for your children (under age 3) to watch during the day?

I let them watch TV on Playhouse Disney starting at 8 a.m. and then while I clean the house, laundry, etc. They usually finish around 11 a.m. with Dora the Explorer on Nic, Jr. No more TV for the day. Is this too much TV?

I don't think so i do almost exactly the same thing the truth is it's your preference. and it is educational. As long as they get outside time and do other things like puzzles and read books. I know that the tv in my house is on most of the day but it doesn't mean we are watching it the whole time it's mostly background noise for us. And a load clock because we know what programs are on when.

i think it is not too much tv. if r a kid it is the only chang u can watch tv. when get older u don't watch tv as much caz u have to work.
Yes, waaaay too much. Children under 3 shouldn't be watching television at all. If you have to let them watch tv, don't let them watch anymore than 1 hour!
I think that is fine. Especially since you have to do chores you have no choice. Anyway, Playhouse Disney and Nick Jr is educational. 3 hours is a perfect amount of TV. It's not too much.
My son is 1 1/2 and he loves to watch Barney on the sprout channel and blues clues and Teletubbies and i hate all three of those showes, but not him he will sit there for hours and be have so i can do what i have to do at home. He loves to watch those cartoons, day and nite if i let him, but he doesnt sit and watch it but maybe 3 to 4 hours a day. Is that wrong to do! It keeps him quiet.
I think an important thing to remember is that a child should not be put in front of the television to keep them quiet or keep them from making a mess of their play area while parents do chores or work. Especially in the early years of their lives (namely preschool), children should be encouraged to do activities that foster developmentally appropriate growth.

While most children's programs are designed to teach them one way or another, this method of learning is not the best when it comes to kids that young. No matter what the program is or how informative it is, television has a way of stunting a child's creative mind by supplying them with the pictures and sounds that they should be creating in their own imaginations. Remember, children learn best by playing!

My suggestion to you is to set out a few different toys for your children to play with while you are doing your chores. Toys are meant to foster creative imagination, as well as the logic and fine motor (i.e. grasping things in their hands) skills they need. Television should be considered a special treat, not the norm in any household. Encourage movement, and your child won't grow up to be a couch potato either!
My pediatrician says that children should not watch more than 1 hour of tv per day. It will overstimulate them and cause them to be cranky, irratible, demanding etc. Sounds like you are using TV as a babysitter. A young child can play with blocks, dolls, trucks etc. while you are doing chores. You can play music (Mozart, Beethoven are supposed to make them smarter?) to keep things more lively too. Kids need to play by themselves when they are alone - TV was only around for the last 50 years - they can live without it!
